New Lawsuit Pushes Back On San Diego Trash Fees

In just a few days, many homeowners will begin paying for trash pick up. It's something they haven't been asked to do in more than a century.

Now, a new lawsuit is in the works. Attorney Michael Aguirre says the new fee violates a proposition, which requires voters to give approval before imposing increases to general taxes and user fees.

Starting July 1st, homeowners will pay about $523 a year for trash pick up. Reporting partner 10 News reports in the lawsuit, Aguirre is pushing for three things, the collection services cannot exceed the cost of service, money collected can only be spent on the cost of providing service and rates must be fair.

The suit comes after voters approved measure B a few years back. It allows the city to overturn an ordinance from 1919 that prohibited the city from imposing trash fees on single family homes.
