San Diego could scale back enforcement of billboards, illegal signs, junk-filled properties and some adult business regulations under a new budget proposal from Mayor Todd Gloria.
City officials say the cuts are part of efforts to close a 146-million-dollar budget deficit and would eliminate seven more inspector positions after previous staffing reductions last year.
Council members warned the move could hurt neighborhood quality of life and slow investigations into issues like abandoned homes and illegal grading.
The city recently approved sharply higher fines for code violations in hopes tougher penalties will encourage voluntary compliance despite reduced enforcement.
