A lawsuit over San Diego’s residential trash collection fees is headed to trial after the City Council failed to approve a proposed settlement Monday.
More than a dozen homeowners claim the city is charging more for trash pickup than it actually costs to provide the service.
San Diego voters approved the fee in 2022, when city officials estimated monthly costs between 23 and 29-dollars for single-family homes. The fee later increased to roughly 40-dollars a month.
The terms of the proposed settlement were not released publicly.
There are also concerns the city could have been responsible for paying the plaintiffs’ attorney fees if the settlement had been approved.
