Tropical Storm Erin has formed in the Atlantic Ocean and is forecast to strengthen into the first hurricane of the season. Erin is located west of Africa’s Cabo Verde islands with sustained winds of 45 mph as of 11 a.m. ET and moving west at speeds of around 20 mph.

Erin is the fifth named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.

Before becoming a tropical storm, Erin drenched the Cabo Verde islands with flooding rains, leaving several people dead as officials declared a state of calamity on islands of St. Vincent and St. Anthony.

While Erin is expected to become a powerful Category 3 hurricane as it moves across the warm water of the Atlantic Ocean, meteorologists are unsure if it will pose any threat to the Caribbean or the United States. Current forecast tracks show that Erin could end up in the waters north of Puerto Rico by Saturday.
