The City of San Diego is dumping thousands of trash and recycling bins, and asking homeowners to pick up the $65-million dollar tab.
Nearly a million existing cans will be trashed, and 750-thousand new ones purchased. City Council members approved the the expenditure Monday night.
The city says it is part of a service upgrade, and many of the current containers have outlived their estimated lifespan. The purchase would also be a "one time fee," as opposed to a recurring cost.
However, critics say the bins don't need to be replaced at all, many are new, and the purchase will add an extra fee to their trash tab.
The cost of the bins are being passed along through a new 44 dollar monthly trash pick up fee the city began charging at the beginning of this month.
